Why Avoid Non-Organic Foods During Pregnancy?

It's so much easier these days to get conventionally produced meats, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products that you may wonder whether or not it's worth your while to purchase only organic foods. Many people will try to tell you that there isn't much difference between conventional and organic foods, or they'll try to tell you that you should only worry about buying organic versions of certain foods. The truth is, though, that organic is always better and that throughout your life, and especially during pregnancy, eating organic foods is by far the better option.

The Truth About Conventional Processing

Many times, we think that when we bring home conventional foods - say apples - from the local grocery store, we can be safe by simply taking time to wash the pesticides off of the skin before eating or cooking with the apple. Recent studies, though, have shown that this is simply not true. If you think about it, this actually does make sense.

Throughout an apple's life - from the time it's a seed to a tree to a piece of fruit growing on a tree - the environmental things it is exposed to become a part of it. This is why fruits and vegetables are full of minerals; the minerals are actually in the ground, and the plant that produces the fruit or vegetable soaks up the minerals and incorporates them into its very being and, thus, into the fruit it produces.

If the tree soaks up minerals it's exposed to, why wouldn't it also soak up pesticides and herbicides that are around it?

Several recent studies have shown that plants actually do soak up pesticides and even some herbicides. These harmful chemicals change the very structure of the fruits and vegetables produced by plants. This is a problem in several ways. For one thing, it may change the actual nutritional value of the produce, making it less healthy by changing its internal structure. For another, the chemicals around the plant become part of the produce, which means every time you take a bite of that conventionally-produced apple, you're getting a big mouthful of pesticides, even if you carefully washed the skin of the apple!

How Pesticides Affect The Body

Unfortunately, not enough studies have been done to show exactly how pesticides in conventionally produced foods affect the body, but they're obviously toxic and terrible for your body. Researchers speculate that they may even make your body process food less efficiently, which means you get less nutrition from every bite you eat when you're eating conventional foods!

For pregnant women, an organic pregnancy diet is even more important because all those toxins cross the placental barrier and get to the baby. Besides this, toxins can concentrate in the breastmilk of lactating women, so they all get to your baby, too.

The best way to avoid these problems during pregnancy is to buy organic food at all times. This means buying meat, produce, and dairy products from organic sources.
