Healthy Pregnancy Tips: Meeting Your Calcium Requirements
Everyone knows that calcium is an essential mineral for maintaining bone mass throughout your life, but did you know that your daily requirements during pregnancy and lactation are even higher than they would be normally? This is because you're eating for two! You have to get enough calcium to not only maintain your own bone structure but also to help your baby build his or hers.
What happens if you don't get enough calcium during pregnancy? Well, you may have heard the old adage that your baby will take what she needs even if you aren't giving it to her. Even though this isn't true of all nutrients (for instance, your baby can't take Vitamin C from your body if you don't ingest any because your body won't store it for long periods of time), it's definitely true for calcium. If your body isn't already providing your baby with what she needs to grow her bone structure, she'll take calcium from your bone structure! Talk about motherhood being the ultimate sacrifice.
You shouldn't have to sacrifice your bones for your baby, though. You may not feel the effects of a lack of calcium now, but your baby stealing calcium from your bones can lead to problems like osteoporosis later in life. Instead of risking this, it's a good idea to make sure you're meeting your daily calcium requirement - about 2.2 grams a day - throughout your entire pregnancy. A normal adult needs about 1.5 grams a day, so you can see that your pregnancy requirements are much higher!
How to Get Enough Calcium
Of course, the most well-known way to get calcium into your diet is through dairy products. The quality of your dairy does matter, though. Eating and drinking commercially processed dairy products may actually do you more harm than good, so make sure you're eating organic dairy products, whatever you do. For the absolute best benefits of dairy, find raw dairy products.
You can check out www.realmilk.com to find out more about obtaining raw dairy products in your area. If they're illegal in your state, you may actually be able to join a co-op. Some farmers will let you buy a portion of a milk cow - paying for her keep, care, and feeding - and then have access to her milk and products just like a regular owner would. In this way, you may be able to get your family healthy, pure, raw dairy without breaking any laws! Sometimes you can also get raw dairy through cheeses and other specialized products that don't have to be pasteurized to be sold in stores and farmers' markets.
According to the book Healing Our Children, which has lots of information on how you can get more calcium into your healthy pregnancy diet, here are the calcium contents of various dairy products:
- 1 cup of milk has about .3 grams of calcium, and 3.5 cups of milk have about 1 gram
- 1 cup of yogurt has about .3 grams of calcium
- 3.5 ounces of hard cheese have about 1 gram of calcium. Soft cheeses contain less, but they still have plenty of calcium in them
If you're lactose intolerant, you can consider getting calcium through non-cow's milk, such as sheep's milk or goat's milk or products made from those types of milk. You can also try fermented milk, such as kefir, in which most of the lactose is already processed for you. Other options include eating fish like salmon with some of the bones crushed into the meat, certain grains, taro root, insects, and certain plants. You can also get calcium from ground shells, bones, egg shells, and antlers, as well as sea food, beet greens, spinach, nuts, seeds, cauliflower, figs, olives, broth made from bones with a bit of vinegar, and even broccoli.
These are all great ways to add calcium to your diet, and you really can't get too much during pregnancy. Instead of turning to a supplement, which won't be easily integrated into your body and your bone structure, get your calcium from a healthy pregnancy diet where you eat plenty of organic, natural milk products, bone products, and vegetables.
