Why Eating a Healthy Pregnancy Diet is Essential for a Healthy Mother

Many people assume that women are supposed to eat and avoid certain foods during pregnancy solely for the health of the growing baby. While a mother's diet most certainly has a profound effect on the health of her child, the truth is that the diet a mother eats before, during, and directly after pregnancy may have even more implications for the mother herself.

You may have heard the folk wisdom that during pregnancy the baby will take what the baby needs from the mother's body. While it's easy to brush off this statement as untrue, it is actually partially true. If the mother is not getting proper nutrients during pregnancy, the baby will actually "steal" the nutrients she has stored in her glands, bones, and muscles, depleting the mother's limited supply of such nutrients.

For instance, a mother who is not getting enough calcium during pregnancy is probably not going to have a brittle-boned baby. Instead, the baby is going to leach its necessary calcium supply directly from its mother's body, which will leave the mother with weaker bones and a much higher risk of developing conditions like osteoporosis in the future.

Anemia during pregnancy

In the modern world of medicine, we don't adequately test mothers-to-be for nutritional deficiencies before and during pregnancy. Instead, we only test for a few key nutrients, one of which is iron. However, even with this simple iron test that most obstetricians and some midwives will give their pregnant patients, we can see this principle of the baby depleting the mother of essential nutrients.

Because our modern diets often give our bodies just enough iron, many women will start out pregnancy with good levels of iron, which can be stored in the blood. However, a mother's need for iron increases throughout pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters when her baby's body is making its own blood supply and using large quantities of iron. When a mother fails to get enough iron to her baby through her own diet, the baby will start stealing the mother's stored iron supply, resulting in iron anemia.

Iron anemia is all too common with the modern pregnant woman simply because women are not regularly getting enough iron in their diets. This is why many pregnant women experience extreme fatigue and other symptoms of iron anemia later in pregnancy, even if they had regular iron levels to begin with.

A good diet protects the baby and the mother

While it's true that the baby will take what he or she needs from the mother's body, what happens when those nutrients are simply unavailable? This is the case with many fat soluble vitamins and minerals, which are largely missing in the modern diet. While a baby can grow into a somewhat healthy child when its mother is lacking these essential nutrients, the baby will not have the absolute best shot at being healthy throughout its life unless its mother focuses on getting just the right nutrition throughout pregnancy.

Besides this, a mother who isn't even getting her basic vitamin and mineral needs met during pregnancy will end up weakened by pregnancy and lactation. She may find herself unable to have children after the pregnancy that depleted her, and she will surely find that her body is less strong after pregnancy than it was before.
