Three Keys for a Successful Natural Childbirth

These days, more and more women are learning about all the harm that is done by medical interventions during childbirth, and they are opting for natural childbirths. However, many times these women simply aren't aware of the three things it takes to have a successful natural childbirth. According to the book Healing Our Children, the three basic ingredients of a natural childbirth include a round pelvic brim, flexible joints, and natural birthing positions.

These three keys come from the research of Dr. Kathleen Vaughn, who studied the births of women in rural India. She identified these three keys only after looking at many, many childbirths to compare those that were naturally smoothest with those that were longer or had more complications. Here's what you need to know about these three natural childbirth keys:

1. A round pelvic brim

In women who come from indigenous cultures that have healthy, whole, organic diets, a round pelvic brim isn't unusual. This is the way that a woman's bones were meant to form, and women from these cultures have wider hips that are better for childbearing. However, modern women who are often raised on insufficient diets from the day they are conceived will often have heart-shaped, narrowed pelvic brims.

Clearly, a narrower pelvic brim makes it more difficult to push the baby out, which leads to a longer labor. A very small percentage of modern women actually have to have surgical C-section births because their pelvic brims are literally too small for their babies to fit through!

Unfortunately, a woman's pelvic brim size is largely beyond her control once she is of childbearing age. The pelvic brim starts to form in the womb, and it will form normally and naturally as long as the mother eats foods that support healthy bone development during her pregnancy. Also, as long as the woman is fed bone-health-supporting foods during her growing period, she will be more likely to have a round pelvic brim once she is of childbearing age.

2. Flexible joints

Although women who have always eaten a healthy, natural, wholesome diet will be more likely to have flexible joints, even those who have spent their entire lives eating modernized diets without enough high nutrition. If you want to get more flexible joints, the key is to start eating a healthy indigenous diet leading up to pregnancy. If your diet includes plenty of nutritious substances, especially joint-building substances and fats that help lubricate the joints, more flexibility will come naturally.

Of course, you can also make your joints more flexible through practicing healthy exercises, such as yoga, and also by leading less sedentary life in general. According to Healing Our Children, "Dr. Vaughn further showed that in all primitive tribes living an outdoor and active life, childbirth is easy and the labor is short." By being more active in general, you'll lubricate your joints and make them more flexible, making childbirth easier and smoother.

3. Natural birthing positions

This is one of the main things a mother can do to increase her chances of a safe, healthy, quick natural childbirth. In our modern world, women have taken to laboring and delivering babies on their backs in a bed. This is simply for the convenience of the doctors! However, in this position, a woman's pelvic brim is at its absolute narrowest, and she is fighting against gravity to move the baby down the birth canal!

However, in this position, a woman's pelvic brim is at its absolute narrowest, and she is fighting against gravity to move the baby down the birth canal!

When women are allowed to birth a child naturally, they are more likely to assume positions that many would think are animalistic. These positions often include squatting and kneeling on all fours or over the edge of a bed. While most modern women would turn up their noses at delivering a baby in such position, they are actually helpful because they draw the baby down the birth canal and also open up the pelvic brim to be as wide as it possibly can be.

By allowing women to assume natural birthing positions rather than unnaturally lying on their backs in childbirth, our society could dramatically reduce the need for dangerous interventions during childbirth!
