How to Practice Inversions During Pregnancy
Inversions practiced during pregnancy can help with many things, including building flexibility that is helpful during the birth process as well as getting the baby in a good position for birth. In fact, inversions are one of the best natural and safe ways to get a breech baby - or one who is bottom-down - into a head-down position, which is much more helpful for a safe, natural birth. Here's what you should know about practicing inversions during pregnancy, according to the book Healing Our Children:
When not to practice inversions
While inversions are not particularly dangerous for most women, those with certain conditions should avoid them for the sake of safety. Women with excess amniotic fluid (which your healthcare provider can diagnose), high blood pressure, loose ligaments, or a sinus infection should avoid inversions. Other than this, it is generally helpful to practice inversions frequently throughout pregnancy.
How to practice inversions
The basis of an inversion is that your knees and hips should be higher than your head and shoulders. There are many ways to practice inversions, but one of the easiest for pregnant women is to prop the knees up on a couch while the hands are placed on the floor. The downward dog position in yoga is a partial inversion, though it doesn't get the knees up quite as high, so it can definitely be a helpful part of a prenatal yoga practice.
When practicing inversions, you should do them for about thirty seconds to two minutes once a day. However, if you are striving to turn a breech baby late in pregnancy, you may practice inversions more often than this.
